Sadly, many new parents and their birth partners are affected by birth trauma and are left in a state of fear or high anxiety following the birth of their baby.  Feelings of traumatic birth can be overwhelming. They can come from a single event, or a combination of things that took place during pregnancy, birth or postnatally.  How you feel about your experience truly matters, your feelings are valid!   ​
Birth trauma can present itself in many ways with symptoms including:
  • feelings of anxiety
  • hypervigilence
  • trouble sleeping
  • flashbacks
  • emotional distress
  • irritability ​
  • panic attacks​
  • tearfulness
  • changes to relationships
  • numbness surrounding the event
  • anger
When you are experiencing even one of these symptoms it may be hard to look forward and can be especially difficult when you are caring for your baby or pregnant again.

What is 3-Step Rewind?

3-step rewind uses NLP techniques with deep relaxation to release the difficult feelings attached to your experience. You are always fully in control and you don’t need to talk about your experiences if you don’t want to.  The theory is that the arousing
emotions associated with the experience of a traumatic experience are detached from the memory of it.  Your memory of the experience is still there for you but the disturbing emotions associated with it are lifted and you can look forward with confidence and calmness again.

The course is set over 3 sessions and can be held over Zoom.

The 3-Step Rewind Process Explained

​The 3 Step Rewind process has proved to be an effective “pattern interrupt” when used to target phobias and has then been expanded into a trauma resolution process that involves:
  • Conversational debrief
  • Relaxation
  • Developing well-formed outcomes
  • Future pacing
  • The rewind technique itself
Undertaking the 3-step rewind process can significantly reduce distress around traumatic memories and birth trauma.
​Step 1 – approx 90 minutes: listening to your story should you wish to share it, validating your feelings, exploring how you could feel if you were free from your trauma symptoms and introducing relaxation, the relaxation will be recorded for you to listen to every day until the next session.  If talking about the traumatic birth experience makes you feel uncomfortable there is no need the share what happened to you. You will need to remember it yourself but you can do this without re-telling.

​Step 2 – approx 60 minutes: the rewind process. A deep relaxation, aiming to disconnect your memory from the symptoms of trauma, so the memory is no longer emotionally charged or triggering (a week after step 1)
Deep relaxation, remembering the event in a specific way whilst feeling safe and secure
​Step 3 – approx 30 minutes: checking in to see what changes you have experienced and if any further support is required going forward and a relaxation (a week after Step 2)

Trauma Explained

Trauma - challenging word isn’t it - and just a label that we may all translate in different ways.  But whether we label it 'trauma' or 'difficult memory', it's not something anyone wishes to experience in any form.   Yet its arrival is often unexpected following one or more particularly traumatic or difficult experiences.
The term ‘fight or flight’ is a very familiar one - evolution has blessed us with this response for the purposes of our own self-preservation.  It’s worked remarkably well, our species is still thriving
However, when a traumatic experience occurs, sometimes its memory remains vivid and new, resulting in a heightened ‘fight or flight’ state.  The amygdala, the part of the brain continuously on the lookout for danger becomes permanently hyper vigilant and over protective leading to that old memory still affecting our perceptions and behaviours in the now.

When should I do the 3-step rewind process?

​3-step rewind is equally as effective 1 month after the event as it is 3 years or even longer after the event. If PTSD symptoms or heavy feelings are still evident then the treatment is useful in eliminating them. Or if you recognise that some of the unhelpful responses that you have day to day are a result of what happened, then treatment can help.

The Relaxation of 3-Step Rewind Process

This video explains the steps of the relaxation part of the 3-Step Rewind process.  As your 3 Step Rewind Practitioner I will be able to provide further insight and answer and questions you may have.

How much does the 3-Step Wind cost?

  • Duration: Three x 1/1.5 hr. sessions (session 2 tends to be the longer one)  6 week post course online follow-up 
  • Dates:  To be arranged to suit you
  • Where:  Over zoom or face to face
  • Cost: €200 euro online, €250 face to face​
